God Formed Me

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. [Psalm 139:13-18 ESV]

This week we’ve looked at finding contentment in our circumstances and the fact that God looks at our heart and not our outward appearance. Today I want to look at how God made us exactly who we are and how much He loves us and thinks about us.

Psalms 139 is a beautiful Psalm showing how much God knows about us and cares for us. If you have time, I would encourage you to read this entire Psalm and consider all the truths given. I will just be looking at a few of them today.

I think none of us would argue that we were created by God. "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created." [Rev 4:11 ESV] He created all things and all things exist by His will, but how often do we think about how delicately He made us? Psalm 139 tells us that we were knitted together, intricately woven. We weren’t just thrown together, but every nuance of your body, personality, and talents were intricately put together before your form or body was ever seen.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made. The word fearfully here means to stand in awe of. I should be in awe of what God has created and done for me in myself, not just the world around me. The word wonderfully means to be separated, distinguished, admirable. He separated us and made us distinguished. We are unique. Each one different. Each one created for His good works, for His glory.

Even before you were born, every day of your life was written in His books. Not only were they written, but the days were formed for you. “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” [Psa 139:16 NLT] God knows exactly the number of days you have. He has set them in place. We cannot change that, but we can find comfort in knowing our God, our good God, has determined our days. “You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.” [Job 14:5 NLT]

The psalmist then goes on to marvel at the number of God’s thoughts. In the version above it almost seems that the psalmist marvels at just simply the thoughts of God, but really, it’s about the thoughts God has on just him, the psalmist David. They are precious to him and they are more in number than the sand.  “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!” [Psa 139:17-18 NLT]

God intricately wove each one of us in our mother’s womb. He knew every trial we would face every day of our lives. He thinks about each of us, personally and individually, more than the number of grains of sand on the beaches of the world. Our response should be that of David’s is in verse 14, “I praise you.” We should praise God for how He created us, the days He’s given us, and the thoughts He has for us.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you find yourself complaining more about what God created in you or praising Him for it?
  2. Have you ever thought about how much God loves you and how often He thinks of you?
  3. Spend some time praising God for everything He done for you, created in you, and given you.
